Different Types of Sports Betting Odds

There are multiple types of odds when it comes to sports betting, and it's important for a player to know and be familiar with all of them.

How Many Different Styles are There?

There are four commonly used betting odds styles, though many are geographically sensitive. Decimal odds are used most commonly in Europe while U.S. odds are used generally in the US and Canada and Hong Kong odds are usually restricted to use in mainland Asia. Fraction odds, the fourth version, isn't used as often but can be used interchangeably with the decimal odds style.

Decimal Odds

Decimal odds are the most common form of betting odds used in European betting houses. This odds chart shows the profit a player would make on each dollar. For example, if a player bets $1, and the bet is at 1.60, he or she stands t make an additional $.60 on that dollar. 1.00 would represent an even bet, and anything above 2.00 represents profit.

Fraction Odds

Fraction odds are almost identical to decimal odds except the bet is expressed in a fraction rather than a decimal. For example, if the bet is set at 1.50, it would appear as ½ in a fraction-based betting table. It is easy to think of it as how much money a player would make on each dollar bet. A 3/2 bet would net the player $3 on each $1 that was wagered.

U.S. Odds

U.S. Odds are the only charts that do not use fractions or decimals to represent bets. A bet equivalent to the 1.50 decimal bet or ½ fraction bet would be represented by -200. In a nutshell, when a U.S Odds chart bet is represented with a positive symbol, it shows how much can be won on a $100 bet. When it is represented with a negative symbol, it shows how much a player needs to wager in order to win $100.

Hong Kong Odds

Hong Kong odds are nearly identical to decimal odds, but these don't include the original bet. So where a decimal odds chart would show a bet as 1.50, Hong Kong odds would show that same bet at .50. There are literally no difference between the outcomes of these two bets. While these are not hard to understand, they are generally only used in Asian Casinos, and not generally seen outside of these locales.

It is good for players to know at least the first three of these styles and be able to use them interchangeably. Many online casinos and sports betting sites allow players to change the betting chart style with the click of a button, but it is always good to be familiar with them all.
